How to Play Checkers

Checkers Rules — The Complete Guide

Checkers (also known as draughts) is one of the world's oldest and most popular board games. This guide covers everything you need to know to start playing checkers online — from basic moves to advanced strategies.

The Board and the Pieces

A checkers game is played on an 8×8 board with 64 alternating dark and light squares. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares closest to them. Only the dark squares are used during play.

How Pieces Move

Regular pieces (men) move diagonally forward by one square at a time. They can only move on the dark squares and cannot move backward. This forward-only movement is what makes positioning so important in checkers.

Capturing Your Opponent

When an opponent's piece is diagonally adjacent to yours and there is an empty square behind it, you can jump over and capture it. In standard checkers rules, captures are mandatory — if you can capture, you must. If another capture is available after your first jump, you continue capturing in the same turn (this is called a multi-jump).

Becoming a King

When one of your pieces reaches the opposite end of the board, it becomes a king. Kings are marked with a crown and can move and capture diagonally in both forward and backward directions. Having kings gives you a significant advantage in the checkers game.

How to Win at Checkers

You win by capturing all of your opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal moves. A draw occurs when neither player can force a win. Understanding when to trade pieces, when to advance, and when to defend is key to winning more checkers games.

Checkers Strategy Tips

  • Control the Center — Pieces near the center have more movement options and give you greater board control.
  • Keep Pieces Connected — Supporting your pieces makes it harder for your opponent to create easy captures.
  • Protect Your Back Row — Keeping your back row secure prevents your opponent from becoming king too easily.
  • Think Ahead — Before making a move, consider what opportunities you might create for your opponent.
  • Trade Strategically — Not every capture improves your position. Consider whether a trade gives you an advantage.
